Hey everyone!
Okay so September has just flown by and here are some of the songs I either found new or rediscovered this month. Have a listen and let me know what you think 🙂
1.Jungle and Notion by Tash Sultana
- I first heard this song on Youtube on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts. Tash is a very talented artist from Melbourne. She uses loops to create her music and is kind of a one-woman band.
2. Darkness Keeps Chasing Me by Grace VanderWaal
- I first saw Grace on America’s got talent back in 2016. I have a number of her songs, but found this one on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts as well. I really like the live version of this piece.
3. Proud and See Your Face(performed by Amber Riley by Todrick Hall
- Proud: I’ve been watching Todrick Halls videos ever since I could remember. He’s a crazy talented artist and I love all of his covers and mashups. He did a visual album called Straight Outta Oz and that is where this song came from. This album is supposed to be a mix of fictional and autobiographical information in the form of music. I watched to whole album on youtube and this was one of my favourite songs.
- See Your Face: This song is also from Todrick’s Straight Outta Oz album. It is performed by Amber Riley who I first saw on the show Glee. She has an amazing soulful voice, that is difficult to forget. I found this song from a try not to cry challenge completed by Superfruit, a youtube channel created by Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi from the Pentatonix.
4. Then ENTIRE soundtrack to CRAZY RICH ASIANS
- Oh my goodness, I love this movie. I’ve seen it three times now, and I’m still not over it. I’m a sucker for romcoms and this movie is just stunning to look at. Anyways back to the music. I have been listening to the soundtrack ever since I saw it the first time. So many of the songs on the album are so happy and since I’m trying to learn Mandarin on my own it’s a good resource to learn from because most of the songs are in Mandarin. Some of my favourites are Waiting for Your Return, My New Swag, Ren Sheng Jiu Shi Xi, and Yellow. I wonder if the song yellow was used not just because it’s a great song, but also because Asians are considered yellow, hmm just an odd thought.
5. Runaway, Running with the Wolves, Warrior, Under the Water, Murder Song (54321), and Forgotten Love By AURORA
- I found AURORA from, have a guess … NPR’s TINY DESK CONCERTS! Man they have an awesome selection of artists. In the concert, she performed Runaway, Running with the Wolves and Murder Song. I found the other songs because of youtube’s autoplay next. So, AURORA is a singer from Norway. She has a unique voice and an interesting performance style.
6. Joanne (acoustic version) by Lady Gaga
- This song is beautiful and sweet. It’s about her late aunt who passed away young. I discovered this song while watching Lady Gaga’s documentary on Netflix (GAGA: Five Foot Two).
7. Skinny love by Bon Iver, but performed by Birdy
- This song was recommended to me when I was in BC but I forgot the name. On one of my discovery playlists on Spotify it showed up and I instantly loved it. It’s a song that has a beautiful melody that can be opened to interpretation on different instruments, like the ukulele perhaps?
8. Caroline by Amine
- This song is really catchy and can get anyone to move. My friend back home first showed me the song when it was really popular, but over the years I forgot about it until one of my friends here played it for me. We were literally walking from class when she was like” Hey listen to this.” and I was like “Oh my gosh I know this song, it’s so good!”
9. 2002 by Anne Marie
- This song is an upbeat bop and was discovered when my friend and I were messing around with some snapchat filters. I would send her a video of me lip syncing to a song and then she would send one back. 🙂
10. Down Under (acoustic) by NONONO
- This song is moody, melancholy and the piano is simple and smooth. It’s a really good reflection from where it came from. I found this song while watching the tv show, the Originals, which was a spin off show to the Vampire Diaries. This song definitely encapsulates the moody, magical, vampire like vibe the show gives off.
11. Sunflower By Shannon Purser (from the Movie, Sierra Burgess is a Loser)
- This song is so sweet. It is simple, and incredibly relatable. Shannon Purser has a lovely voice, and makes the song that much more special. I found this song when I was watching the movie Sierra Burgess is a Loser. The film is funny, cute, sweet and relatable. More than a few Tim Tams and tissues were happily eaten and used throughout the viewing of this movie.
12. I like me better and Chasing Fire by Lauv
- I like the lyrics of these two songs. I think that when two people are in a relationship they should be better together, I believe they should work together as a team to add to each others life. Both of these songs were recommended to me by friends, when I was asking for song recommendations.
13. Gentleman, Gangsta, and Leading man by Will Jay
- AWW these songs are so cute and so are their videos. These three songs are so upbeat and happy, they are sure to put a smile on your face. My friend recommended Gentleman to me and when I saw Will Jay I knew I recognized him from somewhere. Years ago I was watching a video created by Todrick Hall called Disney Dudez and it was a collaboration with the band IM5, which Will Jay used to be a part of.
14. Collide by Odette
- This song is chill, vibey, and a good song to decompress to. The piano and clapping add texture that can’t be missed. While jamming in the botanical gardens, my friend from school recommended this artist.
Happy Listening!!
